i am not quite understanding how we can use articles anywhere to filter articles custom fields?

we made some custom fields in our articles, and we are trying to ultimately create dropdowns to allow website viewers to be able to select the dropdown options to choose filtering options.. (not sure if this would be possible)

but to start.. we just type in manually {articles number-of-bedrooms="3"}{/articles}
is that suppose to show all the custom fields "number-of-bedrooms" that are equal to 3?
right now, doesnt seem to pull up anything. what are we missing?

maybe seeing an example could really help us out. :/
