Undesired span tag in article-nested

We have the following text

{article}{if-linked-shows}<h3>shows</h3>{/if}<ul>{article-nested}[linked-shows]{/article-nested}</ul>{/article}

The output includes a span tag,

<span class="field-value ">

which I can't figure out:

<ul><span class="field-value "><li>...</li></ul>

Why?
