The filter function is great. Could this be extended to include relative values, e.g. relative dates (e.g. >date('today')?

That is already supported and you can use that.
So you can do things like:

Ah, sorry, you are talking about Articles Field, not Articles Anywhere.
No, that is not possible in Articles Field, and is not something I am considering to implement.
