I have the same problem right now!
After updating from AA 14.1.x to the latest 16.0.9 version, all my AA references are not resolved.
When activating the "Output when Empty" option, the string "empty article [id=$id]" is displayed instead of the article reference.
I have the latest J4.4.6 installed.

You can use the 'Confidential information' button in the forum editor to hide sensitive information.

PS: What have you placed in the "Output when Empty" field?

... in the output field I putted in one of the examples 'empty article [id=$id]' displayed, when setting the cursor to the empty field.

Go to the AA behaviour options. When putting the cursor to the input-field (this is at first empty and shows "nothing") of that option, a popup window whith three entries is diplayed. You can select
- empty article
- empty article [id=$id]
- empty article (not found)

That popup window you speak of is not something provided by Articles Anywhere. Probably some browser plugin you have that is providing suggestions.

... mh, very interesting. But is strange to me, that the content of the popup has the focus of an empty field.
Anyway, the input is only used as a string and it is displayed instead of the AA-syntax.

Articles Anywhere seems to be working as it should.
You are trying to output the text of the article with ID 1943.
However, that article is unpublished. So Articles Anywhere will not show it.
If you want Articles Anywhere to also show unpublished articles, you should tell it to ignore the publish state. You can switch on the "Ignore Publish State" in the Articles Anywhere system plugin settings.

that is a is a nasty trap.
How about AA issues a warning in such cases.
"You are trying to display an unpublished article. However, the AA option required for this is not set."
That would save a lot of unnecessary work and searching.
