I'm using Articles Anywhere to list events that are happening and was wondering if there was a way to automatically have it have a heading for the current month, then the list of events for that month, then the next month heading (as long as there were events) and then list that month's events.

That is possible with the Joomla 4 version of Articles Anywhere. Not for Joomla 3.
With the J4 version you can do an {if} check to compare with the month of the previous item in the list. If different, output the month.
