Unable to assign multi lingual language switcher to a condition

Sean Carney's Avatar Sean Carney
I have a multi lingual Joomla 5 site I am develeoping. Every Category, Article and Module is assigned to a language. This has been working well but I thought I would like more control so installed Advanced Module Manager.

I have created some modules and assigned them to conditions I just created. Since there appears to be no option to select the Joomla Language that is assigned I decided to assign them to the Categories that are also assigned to the various languages.

I was able to assign and save Custom Modules. I was able to assign and save Smart Search Modules. But, I am not able to assign and save Language Switcher Modules. I get an error message when I try to assign them to the condition. The error message I am seeing says "Invalid field" Language". However, interestingly enough the Language field is not actually visible in any of these modules.

Interestingly enough. Even though the advanced module manager conditions gave me an error message, I was able to have a successful assignment of the module to the Categories condition that I set up.

However, it seems to me that two things are problematic besides the error messages.

I would expect to see the language assigned to the modules.

I would expect to have Assigned language as a Condition that could be set.

That is the easiest way for me since everything on the site is being assigned to a language.

You can see my Articles and Categories to see how that works.

Thanks for your help.

Why not use the Language condition rules?

The reason I did not use the Languages condition is that I was pretty sure that was going to be based on the language settings of the "Visitor" set in their browser and operating system instead of the language settings selected in Joomla for the categories, articles and modules, to etc. The strength of the Joomla multi lingual settings is that we can make it really easy to switch the language through the language switcher and the "Also available in" language links and buttons, and not be restricted to the visitors language.

The Language condition works the same way as the language assignment in Joomla core.
So it is based on the language Joomla sees for that visitor.

When in doubt: try!

OK. That simplifies things. Appears to be working perfectly.

I have still be seeing the intermittent error message but it does not seem to effect anything.
